First edition, first printing. Three volumes. Inscribed presentation copy. Publisher's original green / blue cloth with gilt titles and decoration to the spine. Vol I 248pp; vol II 234+1pp ad; vol III 245+1pp ad. Half titles to all three volumes. Each volume firmly bound with the gilt bright, volume one with a three corner tear towards the top of the spine. The contents are spotted to the prelims with some offsetting of the author's inscriptions to two half titles, otherwise generally clean and bright throughout. One signature in volume II shaken. The author's third novel. Rare.

Volume one is signed by the author on the front pastedown underneath which she has added the address "Meadow View / Hampton Hill". Volume three is inscribed by the author on the front pastedown "From the author / To her dear Parents / General and Mrs Hopkins / September 29th 1880".
