EXCURSIONS IN NORTH AMERICA DESCRIBED in Letters from a Gentleman and his Young Companion to their Friends in England

Second edition. Contemporary calf with gilt titles on a red panel to the spine. Gilt decoration the the board edges. A very good copy, the leather a little rubbed, the inner and outer hinges starting to crack slightly, but the binding remains firm. The lightly foxed contents, lacking the fold out map, are otherwise complete and free of previous owners' stamps and inscriptions.

The Quaker philanthropist and writer Priscilla Wakefield was well known in her time as a writer of non-fiction books for children, but is of particular modern interest due to her book 'Reflection on the Present Condition of the Female Sex; with Suggestions for its Improvement' which can be described as a very early feminist work. This title imagines a trip across America in letter form. Provenance: from the library of Martin Stone.
