First edition in this form of Southey's work. Second edition, abridged, of Barrow's. Full tan calf, the boards ruled in gilt. The spine with five raised bands, gilt decoration to the compartments and two black morocco title labels lettered in gilt. A very good or better copy, the binding square and firm with minor rubbing. The contents with a small paper square bearing an ink numeral to the front free endpaper and a little spotting to the prelims are otherwise in good order and clean throughout. A handsome copy.
Southey's piece on Cromwell had originally been published in the Quarterly Review, and that on Bunyan in an 1830 edition of A Pilgrim's Progress. Provenance: From the library of Martin Stone.
